T H E L I V I N G F L O O R
T H E C O N C E P T
The concept behind "The Living Floor" is to create an innovative indoor farming system that is integrated into the unused space beneath raised floors. Many large buildings have raised floors, including the MIT Stata Center. This space can be used for bringing in greenery and new technologies in indoor farming to enhance the already existing space without intruding on potentially needed area in the building.

The full frame structure is further building upon the detailed corner in order to have continued complexity at a larger scale. The idea is to have the structure sit flush with the existing floor, as illustrated by the image of the Stata Center floor.

I N I T I A L D E S I G N S
The initial design is based around a frame that is the size of a standard floor tile. The plants are held in a tray, and lit by LEDs from above, and the surrounding area beneath the floor houses the electronic components and the water tank and pumping system. This system would grow leafy greens due to the necessary root space and lack of general volume for other types of plants to grow.
C O M P O N E N T D E S I G N
The parts of the model include a frame, glass sides and top, a "floor" to the tile, a foot to raise it off the ground slightly, and a piping system using NFT (nutrient film technique) that implements gravity to keep water flowing through to the plants.
